What causes a dry eye?

Dry eye is a very common condition that we are diagnosing more and more. Dry eye essentially means that patients have a reduced amount of tears. Dry eyes can be associated with a condition called blepharitis, which is an eye inner sore and inflammation of the eyelids and the two go together.

One of the reasons why we are seeing more people with dry eyes is that we are living in an environment which is drying for the eyes, such as air conditioned offices, cars with the heaters on and working in front of the computers where we blink less so the eyes are more going to be drying. In addition, we also are more able to diagnose dry eyes with the technology available to us. It’s easier to diagnose dry eye at a much earlier stage.
